Project 2 Team presents: «The Book as an Artform – Contemporary Artists’ Books 2»

On the occasion of the proclamation of Athens as the World Book Capital for the year 2018, the Project 2 team presents a major exhibition on the theme of the visual book. The exhibition opens on September 28 at the Athens School of Fine Arts in the renovated space of the Old Library and will run until 5 October 2018.

With 100 Greek and foreign artists participating and more than 400 art books of various dimensions and materials, the exhibition is organized as a continuation of the successful 2016 exhibition “The Book as an Artform – Contemporary Artists’ Books”, which was presented at the exhibition space of the Association of Greek archeologists.

The exhibition will be accompanied by talks, workshops and a bookbinding presentation where visitors will learn more about the art of the book and meet the participating artists.

The purpose of the exhibition is to highlight the artists’ books, a means of artists’ expression that first appeared in the early 20th century and evolved into an original and different way of projecting concepts and ideas that concern the artist. Starting from the form of the book, the artist creates a unique work of art that can combine sculpture, photography, painting, printmaking, the written word, sound and image. There are infinite possibilities for artists to create and experiment with this medium.

The exhibition wants to present to the general public the excellent work of many visual and bookbinding artists. To date, it aspires to be the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of visual books in Greece. A tribute to the book as an object of art, enjoyment and knowledge that has accompanied humans for 4,000 years until the dawn of the digital age.
