The Transient nature of Life – La nature éphémère de la vie

The Desmos Gallery cordially invites the public to the solo exhibition of Maria Stamati, entitled “The Transient Nature of Life,” which will take place on Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, at 6:00 pm. The artist’s works explore the interconnections between time, memory, and relationships. In a site-specific exhibition in Paris, the artist will present a series of pieces inspired by the historic bookshop of the exhibition space, located in the heart of Paris and the 14th arrondissement.

The three sections of the exhibition function conceptually and morphologically as interconnected vessels, through which the thread of the narrative is revealed. The grid and the threads facilitate the connection between signifiers and conceptual axes through expressive writing. The concept of materiality is of pivotal importance in the creation of a world that projects the eternal course of life.

In a diptych of white works, the fleeting footprint, the simplicity of the subject and its small and insignificant nature are brought into focus.

The six black works at the centre of the exhibition are inspired by a book that unfolds in space like a story. These works collectively constitute a visual novel, which emerges from the intrinsic duality of visual art and its interrelationship with both poetry and the written word. Maria Stamati employs a collage technique, utilising paper and ink, to create a ‘visual narrative’ comprising a multitude of elements and images, which evoke the cyclical nature of life.

The exhibition concludes with a work that employs the grid of a building as a metaphorical canvas on which a group of words are inscribed, thereby making a direct reference to language. For Stamati, the word is the means by which the world is registered in our consciousness, the instrument through which we communicate and express ourselves, and ultimately, the vehicle through which we perceive reality. “Language also has the capacity to heal us.”

The DESMOS bookshop, which was founded by Mr Yannis Mavroeidakos in 1983, has evolved to become much more than just a conventional bookshop. The establishment encompasses a number of different roles, including a publishing house, a literary magazine, an educational facility, an art gallery, and a social gathering point for those with an interest in Greece. Over the past forty years, this establishment has served as a bastion and refuge for the Greek language and literature in the French capital. Noteworthy visits to the bookshop and gallery have included those from prominent Greek and French intellectual figures and artists such as Kostas Axelos, Ado Kyrou, Vassilis Alexakis, Claude Mossé, Jacques Lacarrière, Jean-Paul Vernant, and André Kedros, to name but a few.

La galerie Desmos vous invite le mardi 28 mai 2024, à 18h00, à l’exposition personnelle de Maria Stamati intitulée ”La nature éphémère de la vie / The Transient nature of Life”. Le flux du temps, la mémoire et les relations sont au cœur des œuvres que l’artiste expose à Paris dans une exposition in situ, spécialement conçue pour cet espace, inspirée de la librairie historique de l’espace d’exposition au cœur de Paris et du 14e arrondissement.

Les trois sections de l’exposition fonctionnent conceptuellement et morphologiquement comme des vaisseaux interconnectés à partir desquels le fil de la narration se déploie… La grille et les fils relient les significations et les axes conceptuels avec l’écriture expressionniste comme point commun. La matérialité contribue à la création d’un monde qui projette le cours éternel de la vie…

L’empreinte fugace, la simplicité, le petit et l’insignifiant sont capturés dans un diptyque d’œuvres blanches.

Les six œuvres noires au centre de l’exposition font référence à un livre qui se déploie dans l’espace comme une histoire. Elles constituent un roman graphique qui découle de la double nature de l’artiste visuelle et de sa relation à la poésie et à l’écrit. Maria Stamati crée un “récit visuel” à partir de collages, de papier et d’encre avec de nombreux éléments et images différents, qui font allusion au cycle de la vie.

L’exposition se termine visuellement par une œuvre où la grille du bâtiment est la “toile” pour l’inscription d’un groupe de mots et fait directement référence au langage. Pour Stamati, le mot écrit enregistre le monde dans notre conscience…, c’est le moyen par lequel nous communiquons et nous nous exprimons et, en dernière analyse, “nous sommes (aussi) guéris par le langage”.

La librairie DESMOS a été créée par M. Yannis Mavroeidakos en 1983. Elle est plus qu’une simple librairie. C’est une maison d’édition, un magazine littéraire, une petite école, une galerie et un lieu de rencontre pour les amis de la Grèce. Depuis quarante ans, ce lieu est le foyer et le refuge de la langue grecque et de la littérature grecque dans la capitale française. Des intellectuels et artistes grecs et français célèbres ont visité la librairie et la galerie, tels que Kostas Axelos, Ado Kyrou, Vassilis Alexakis, Claude Mossé, Jacques Lacarrière, Jean-Paul Vernant, et André Kedros.
